Why Does My Ring Fit Differently in Summer and Winter?

Why Does My Ring Fit Differently in Summer and Winter?

One of the reasons I thought this would be a useful topic to talk about is becausetowards the end of my pregnancy, my hands have become so swollen that none of my rings will go on! As a jeweller who is usually surrounded by rings every day, having completely bare fingers feels very strange!

Thankfully, I know this is temporary and I’m certainly not rushing to have my rings resized. It is a perfect example of just how much our finger size can change — sometimes quite dramatically — without our actual ring size permanently changing.

Pregnancy is an extreme example, but temperature, fluid retention and even the time of day can all make a surprising difference to how your rings fit.

Why Do Fingers Swell in Warm Weather?

During warmer weather, your body naturally tries to regulate its temperature. Blood vessels widen and you may retain more fluid in your hands and fingers.

As a result, a ring that fitted perfectly during winter may suddenly feel much tighter on a hot summer’s day.

This is particularly noticeable during very warm weather, after exercise or when you’ve been travelling.

Why Are Rings Looser in Winter?

The opposite can happen when temperatures drop.

In colder weather, blood vessels constrict and fingers can become slightly smaller. This means a ring that feels secure during summer may spin around or feel noticeably looser during the winter months.

For some people the difference is tiny; for others, it can be surprisingly noticeable.

Your Finger Size Can Change Throughout the Day

Temperature isn’t the only factor. Exercise, hydration, salty foods and general fluid retention can all temporarily affect the size of your fingers.

Pregnancy is another perfect example. Fluid retention and swelling can make rings feel extremely tight or, in my case at the moment, impossible to put on at all!

This is why wedon’t recommend guessing your ring size or relying solely on plastic or at-home ring sizers.

Does My Ring Actually Need Resizing?

Not necessarily — and this is important.

If your ring only becomes tight during hot weather and fits comfortably for the rest of the year, permanently making it larger could mean it’s far too loose during winter.

Likewise, temporary changes such as pregnancy aren’t a good reason to rush into altering a treasured ring.My own rings will be staying safely put away until my hands return to normal!

However, if your ring is consistently uncomfortable, regularly slipping off, difficult to remove or spinning excessively throughout the year, it’s worth having the fit professionally checked.

The Ring Itself Makes a Difference

The width and style of a ring also affect how it feels.

A wide wedding band can feel considerably tighter than a fine engagement ring in exactly the same finger size. The shape and construction of the ring also need to be considered.

That’s why atShaw Jewellers we professionally measure your finger and assess the ring itself before recommending a resize.

Don’t Rush to Resize a Sentimental Ring

We would always recommend having your jewellery assessed before deciding to alter it.

Repeated or unnecessary resizing isn’t ideal, particularly with older, delicate or sentimental pieces. At Shaw Jewellers, we alsodon’t stretch rings to increase their size, as this can thin and weaken the metal and potentially put gemstone settings at risk.
